He was born in San Clemente, California, and grew up having the surfing culture surrounding him. He attended the Orange County School of the Arts and centered on acting and performance art, manifesting his Filipino and Japanese origin.

West is ocean conservation and a social justice advocate. During his school days, he joined Anna Deavere Smith’s Identity Project master class which showed keen keenness about using his work to express cultural narratives.
