Bonnie Hunt was born on September 22, 1961, in Chicago, Illinois. She is the daughter of Robert Edward Hunt and Alice E. Hunt and has six siblings. Bonnie attended Saint Ferdinand School and Notre Dame High School for Girls in Chicago. Before pursuing acting, she worked as an oncology nurse at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

Bonnie Hunt co-founded an improvisational comedy troupe called An Impulsive Thing in 1984. She was also a member of Chicago’s Second City. In 1988, she auditioned for the role of Sally Dibbs in Rain Man during her lunch break and won the part. Bonnie was married to investment banker John Murphy in 1988, and they separated in 2006, with their divorce finalized in 2008. She is a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan and has attended every opening day at Wrigley Field since 1977. Bonnie is also an honorary board member of the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.
