Born on 1948-07-30 in Casablanca, French Morocco, as Juan Moreno y Herrera-Jiménez, Reno is of Spanish descent. His parents, originally from Andalusia, Spain, moved to North Africa to escape the Francoist regime. At 17, Reno relocated to France, where he pursued acting at the Cours Simon School of Drama in Paris. He has been married three times and is a father to six children.

Jean Reno is multilingual, fluent in French, Spanish, Italian, and English. He turned down the role of Agent Smith in The Matrix. Additionally, he provided the French voice for Mufasa in The Lion King.
