He has been married to actress Debra Winger since 1996, and they have a son named Gideon. Howard also has an older son, Sam, from a previous marriage.

Before pursuing acting, Howard worked in various fields, including the Wyoming oil industry and on a New Mexico ranch. He has a sister, Joy, and two younger brothers, Jim and Kip.
