Michael Shanks began his acting career with guest appearances on television series such as Highlander and The Commish in the mid-1990s. His breakthrough role came in 1997 when he was cast as Dr. Daniel Jackson in the television series Stargate SG-1.

Born on December 15, 1970, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, Michael Garrett Shanks grew up in Kamloops. He developed an interest in acting after witnessing Richard Dean Anderson prepare for a scene in MacGyver. Shanks attended the University of British Columbia’s Fine Arts program, graduating in 1994.
Trivia
Shanks enjoys playing ice hockey and once considered a professional career in the sport. He was part of the Stargate SG-1 hockey team, competing against other Vancouver-based productions.

Throughout his career, Shanks has received recognition for his performances, including a Leo Award for Best Lead Performance by a Male in a Dramatic Series in 2004 for the Stargate SG-1 episode “Lifeboat”.
